Dr. Venkat Ramakrishnan is a leading Breast Reconstructive Surgeon with a distinguished international career spanning more than four decades. He specialises in microsurgical breast reconstruction, aesthetic breast surgery, liposculpture, and body contouring.

He formerly held the position of Consultant Plastic Surgeon and also, the Director at the St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns in Chelmsford, United Kingdom, one of Europe’s top centres for complex plastic and reconstructive surgery. During his tenure there, he led the breast reconstruction service, performing advanced microsurgical techniques such as the DIEP flap and TUG flap for patients undergoing mastectomy or requiring complex reconstruction.

He has performed over 6500 procedures, making him one of the most experienced reconstruction surgeons in this field globally.

Professor Ramakrishnan qualified in medicine in 1983 and completed his plastic surgery training in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He has been practicing both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery since 1987. His clinical interests also extend to chest wall, abdominal, and lower limb reconstruction, supported by his microsurgical expertise.

 

In addition to his surgical practice, he has played a significant role in surgical education and professional development. He was the first Tutor in Plastic Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and served as Director of the St Andrew’s Centre. He has held leadership roles in national surgical bodies, including the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and the National Mastectomy and Reconstruction Audit in the UK. He currently chairs the Microsurgery Sub-committee of BAPRAS.

 

Professor Ramakrishnan is also deeply involved in academic work. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and the Archives of Plastic Surgery, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. His research focuses on microsurgical technique, free flap physiology, and reconstructive outcomes. He has delivered keynote lectures at global conferences, including the Gillies Oration (UK) and the Susruta Oration (India).

 

Professor Ramakrishnan is also deeply involved in academic work.
